The karyotype of the abnormal Chapter 1: Chromosomes and Neoplasia 41 cells appeared to be 46,XX,-14,-18,+i(18q) + i(14q). Two cases of ALL have been reported in patients with constitutional translocations, one a 4/14 translocation 79 that is not the same breakpoint as in AT, and the other in a patient with a 22/12 translocation. lOS Monocytic Leukemia The monocytic leukemias are rare, and there is only one report of banding in a case of monocytic leukemia. 23 In most cells of the marrow, there were three or four extra number 8's which were 8p-.

These sites are now numerous and include chromosomes 2, 9, 10, 12, 13, 16, 17, 19, 21, 22. Further, 9 and 22 may be involved in complex translocations involving a third chromosome. 151 ,227 When this marker chromosome is present, it can be found in the bone marrow of both treated and untreated cases. In untreated cases or cases in relapse, it can also be found in the peripheral blood. During remission, the abnormal chromosome cannot be demonstrated in the peripheral blood. It is clear that the marker chromosome is also present in erythropoietic cells, megakaryocytes, and macrophages.

Kakati et al. 126 ,128 have studied the chromosomes of breast cancer cells in pleural effusions. , in one case,128 there are 82 chromosomes and a distribution of extra chromosomes strongly suggestive of derivation from an originally tetraploid cell. There is, however, a total of 13 marker chromosomes, 8 of which are present in all cells. The derivation of some of the markers even with excellent banding could not be determined. These workers draw attention in particular to the presence in one case of 4 marker chromosomes, all of which are derived for the most part from the long arms of chromosome 1.
